Overview:
Oropharynx is the middle part of the pharynx(throat) behind the mouth. It
includes base tongue, tonsil, soft palate, uvula and pharyngeal wall ( side
and back walls of the throat)

How do you diagnose Oropharyngeal cancers?
- Clinical examination of oral cavity, throat and neck
- Fibreoptic Endoscopy / Examination under anaesthesia with biopsy
- CT/MRI / PET CTscan
- HPV testing
Treatment for Oropharyngeal cancers:
- Surgery: Early cancers can be treated by LASER or Robotic
Surgery.
- Advantages: excellent cure rates, maximal voice preservation,
reasonable functional outcome & minimal side effects
- Radiation therapy: first line of treatment for early oropharyngeal
cancers. IMRT is the preferred modality for cancers of the
oropharynx
- Chemotherapy: used along with radiation in advanced
oropharyngeal cancers
