The word LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.
LASER is one of the treatment modalities of surgery in certain cancers and precancerous conditions. LASER therapy uses an intense, narrow beam of light to remove or destroy cancer and abnormal cells that can turn into cancer.
LASER is most often used for treatment of cancers and precancers of the oral cavity, larynx, anus, skin, cervix, penis, vagina and vulva. It is also used to ease certain symptoms of advanced cancer such as bleeding or blockage.
3 types of LASERs used to treat cancers: Carbon Dioxide (CO2) lasers. Argon lasers and Neodymium: yttrium- aluminium-garnet (Nd:YAG) lasers.
CO2 Laser is most commonly used for oral cavity, larynx and skin surfaces. Nd:YAG lasers used for internal organs like uterus, esophagus and colon.
Argon lasers are used in photodynamic therapy.
