Overview:
Oral cancer is the most common cancer among Indian men.
What are oral cancers?
Cancers developing within the oral cavity. It includes lips, tongue, gums,
cheeks, upper and lower jaw bones, roof and floor of the mouth .
Risk factors associated with oral cancers:
- Tobacco- consumption of pan, pan masala, gutka, masheri, smoking of
beedi, cigarettes is a leading cause .
- Alcohol – consumption of alcohol increases the risk of oral cancer.
- Chronic irritation of gums and cheek by ill fitting dentures or sharp
teeth is a risk factor.
- Poor oral hygiene :Tooth decay, gum disease & not brushing teeth
regularly can increase the risk of oral cancer.
- Lack of proper nutrition and diet low in fruits and vegetables: linked
with an increased risk of cancers of the oral cavity.
- Infection with certain high risk HPV types(16,18) increases the risk of
oral cancer, especially in younger people.
- Exposure to sunlight’s UV rays may cause lip cancer
Warning signs :
- Non healing ulcer within the oral cavity for more than 2-3 weeks.
- White or red patch inside the mouth.
- Lump in the neck or mouth.
- Difficulty in chewing, speaking, swallowing or moving the tongue.
- Hoarseness of voice.
- Unexplained bleeding from the mouth.
How do diagnose oral cancers?
- Oral examination by a trained oncologist is the first step
- A punch biopsy from the suspected area along with a CT or MRI
will help in the diagnosis
Treatment for Oral Cancer:
- Surgery i.e removal of the tumor with or without plastic surgery
- LASER or Robotic surgery can be done in selected cases
- Radiation Therapy
- Chemotherapy, Targeted therapy & Immunotherapy

- Regular oral self examination can help to pick up precancerous lesions
as well as potential signs of cancer early
- Regular dental check ups
